The 2017 Global Burden of Disease Study shows that depression, anxiety and schizophrenia are among the 20 leading causes of years lived with disability worldwide i.e. the number of years lost due to ill-health, disability or early death according to the World Health Organization (WHO).[1,2]

The burden of mental disorders keeps on growing with significant impacts on population health and societies around the world.

PROs provide essential insights into the patient experience and enable the delivery of care services that truly meet the needs of those affected by mental health conditions.

Standardization for widespread adoption

PROMs have long been used to support diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis in mental health. Many validated instruments are now available and innovative approaches have been introduced in the last decade.

Today, PROMs development increasingly leans towards modern item response theory, one of the main examples being the Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS).

PROMIS was developed as a generic state-of-the-art measurement system to monitor physical, mental, and social health in adults and children.

The questionnaire can be used with the general population and with those who are living with chronic conditions, including those relating to mental health.

In recent years, there has also been major efforts to standardize the use of PROMs in mental health.

The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) has notably developed multiple Standard Sets to support patients affected by a variety of mental health conditions.

Success for the long term

In order to ensure treatment success, long-term follow-up is often required to detect early signs of relapse.

Prior to the first consultation to long-term follow-up, our outcome measurement platform enables the real-time reporting of PROs.
